Hi - my name is Ellie
May 19. 2013
I was daydreaming as usual laying on a clean towel in my cage...when the door opened and people came in to look at all the cats available for adaption. First they looked at two others and then it was my turn to get petted...
I was taken to a meeting room and it took them only a few minutes to decide that they wanted to take me to their home. That date was May 16th 2013.
I am about one year old and my new parents will dedicate May 16th as my date of birth.
I have been in this shelter for some months already:
Deming/Luna County Humane Society
2125 Onate Rd SE
Deming, NM 88030
575-546-2024
I am a Domestic Shorthair, a black Tabby. My weight is 7 pounds.
My parents named me Ellie right there in the office. My mom said she had a doll named Ellie when she was a kid and had to leave her behind when she had to flee the Russian Front of World War II in East Prussia in Germany in 1945
My price was $ 31.50 including spaying and an annual Rabies shot. This shot and two other important ones were given to me yesterday, May 18th. I felt groggy and tired because of it and didn't eat or drink anything. I will be spayed May 30.
My parents Karin and Dieter told me that they had a cat named Susi which traveled with them around in the entire USA for 11 years. She died October 2nd 2009. You can read about it in Karins Blog:
http://karinbartschwhitehair.blogspot.com/ ( "Remembering our cat Susi").
I live now in a big camper trailer called Fifth Wheel with many windows and the brightness of my new home is something I have to get used to.
The first night I hardly slept because I was so happy. I snuggled up to both of my parents and they petted me when they woke up. Oh - I like it!

Today I have a story to tell which is all about a very important thing - my litter box.
My mom Karin was thinking long and hard where to place the litter box without it being much noticeable before I even came into her life...
She had made a suggestion to my dad Dieter to remove one door of the vanity in the bathroom to place a simple flat litter box inside the walled compartment on the Linoleum floor. Dieter is always eager to please Karin and did what she wanted. She had to place the laundry detergent, brushes and sponges elsewhere, in this case on top of the washer/dryer. Karin was sewing a small curtain to cover up the bottles taking space in the upper shelve. All looked good. When I went the first time to pee I had no problems stepping into the litter box.
Karin had to empty the box twice and realized that the cleaning process involved too much bending because the litter "littered" the Linoleum and had to be taken out, too. So - they both drove to K-mart and found the same type of litter box their late cat Susi had. They were lucky to find one matching the color of the kitchen counter. Dieter screwed the vanity door back in.
Yesterday afternoon I started exploring the kitchen/living room. Interesting! I ducked when birds flew by, never saw those things...the Television caught my attention because "America's Funniest Videos" showed all kind of other animals and PBS even let big cats loose. That was a little too much at once and I run upstairs into the bedroom again.
And my appetite returned. I ate and drank normal again - well, a little more than that, the shots had killed my appetite for 2 days... It was high time to relieve myself...but this big box looked odd and the entrance was closed by a free swinging clear plastic lid. No way I will deal with that lid even though I was shown over and over how it works. I paced back and forth and meowed.....Finally, Dieter taped that darn lid to the inside ceiling of the box and the entrance looked inviting. After a short while my full bladder got the best of me and I carefully stepped into it. I received applause when I came out again. Dieter will remove the tape and let the lid hang down again when I will be familiar with the strange box entrance.
Will I ever put my head against that plastic and let it swing open to get inside?
I do not know yet - I have to think about it....after all, I am a CAT!

Today I found out that Dieter's hair needs to be combed. I climbed onto the couch backrest, positioned myself directly behind him and started grooming the back of his head with my tongue. He started laughing and then Karin chimed in. Karin said it was too bad that she did not have her camera handy because if she would have stood up to get it, I would have sprung right after her....Karin knows cats well...
May 23. 2013
Last two nights I started again to groom Dieter, this time on his forehead and his eyebrow. I was re-positioned by him every time until I got it - - applying my raspy tongue to his skin in the middle of night is not a good idea...
By the way - do not wait for that litter box problem to be solved soon, I can hold it until I am almost whining, then Dieter takes pity on me and tapes it to the box ceiling again. Will see who wins and when.....
Today Karin wanted to play with me and clapped her hands together, laughed and talked to me and ran after me. Iwas very confused - I thought she was angry with me. I ducked in the nearest room corner and meowed. I preferred to lay upstairs in the bedroom today to teach Karin a lesson. She did not know that nobody ever played with me like this.
Karin placed an open cardboard box near me today in the hopes that I jump right in...well- I didn't, but I promised her silently to learn fast to act like a very young cat.

I really feel good and discovered the joy of exercises, of running. I do those when Karin and Dieter sleep. Once in awhile I overdo it a little and they wake up shortly. I receive some nice petting and small talk and then settle down as much as I am able to because the nights are so wondrous with the full moon shining into the windows. The mini blinds are partially open, so I can look out. My mom and dad are really good in knowing what cats need. I thank them by not touching those.
Karin had a 1000-pieces Jigsaw Puzzle open. She usually finishes those within 2 - 3 days. Now it took her some hours longer because I stepped very carefully onto it and put myself onto the still empty spots, so she was unable to continue for a while because now she petted me instead of putting pieces in. I was very careful by standing up again. I did that several times to give her some rest in between. Today she finished it. Two pieces were missing, but that was not my fault, it was bought on a Florida flea market as a used one.
My afternoon naps I enjoy stretched out on Karin's bed.

The following picture shows me taking loving care of Karin. I have to put my head on her hand to keep her from using the computer mouse once in awhile, so she has time to go to the bathroom or serve Dieter coffee and cake......I love being close to my humans!

Yesterday morning Dieter and Karin put me in my carrier and drove me to the Deming Animal Clinic, where I had an appointment to get spayed. I was only allowed drinking water, no food was anywhere around since 8 PM the night before.
This morning, one day later, they picked me up again. My ordeal wasn't really one, I feel the same as yesterday!
Here is my story:
The girls in the clinic prepped me, gave me a shot and shaved my belly. They discovered a scar and showed it to the doctor. Sure enough......I was already spayed!
The clinic did not call my parents because I had to stay there anyway for the day to recover from the anaesthesia.
When Dieter and Karin picked me up this morning, they were surprised and happy that I did not had any pain and discomfort. I was happy also to be home again and I checked everything out right away...yes, everything in the same place.
Karin had a puzzle open again because she thought I would be groggy for at least 2 days and she took advantage to play without me interfering. Hahaha!!!!

Karin had bought me a very soft fabric mouse on a short elastic string, had combined it with a longer string and connected it to the handle of the upper pantry door next to the refrigerators. Wow! I love that. I play with it half the night, because my parents say so....When they enter the kitchen in the morning, the carpets are all out of line because I pull the string as far as it goes, release it - and the mouse springs up high into the air. Of course, I jump right after it and catch it in mid-air. Dieter is the first to see this and he does not mind to bend down and put the small carpets straight again.
I cannot show you a picture, because the one Karin took looked like no action at all and she deleted it again......
A video would be nice - but Karin has a free site with weebly.com and videos are not included.....
Another thing:
I like to take short naps after the action nights in the AM hours - and I try since a couple of days to get a chance to lie down on Dieter's chair he occupies reading. I meow and chirp like a bird, go around in circles in the back of the living room and one day Dieter stood up and went to the bathroom - BINGO! When he came back I was cuddled up in his chair.....
For 2 days this was going on, today he finally got it. After breakfast he sits on the couch and leaves me the chair.
After noon I go upstairs into the bedroom and sleep on my perch. You do not know what that is? I will tell you.
Opposite of their bed there is a drawer chest. On top of that are wooden boards, which Karin emptied out halfways for me to have a hiding place. At about 3 PM I come down and see what both of my parents are doing......

Today I got a ride to the Vet again for 2 Booster Shots. The ladies there were praising me because I am "so gentle". We had to wait for one hour until it was my turn to get my shot. I was sitting very quiet in my carrier, not meowing once!
Karin and Dieter cleaned the litter box today and gave me new litter. And Dieter let the litter box door down.
What can I say - it was no problem to push that door and go in, no problem at all. When I exited that box I got praised again - but I did not really care, I am very tired today, I have to sleep my shots off......

Dieter could not believe his eyes this morning - there was a dead chewed up big Palmetto Bug in the middle of kitchen. They are one of the fastest bugs around...... no problem for me, I am faster!
Today I played really nice, with a ping-pong ball. I am getting praises all the time because I try to please Karin and Dieter.

I am mastering now the art of soccer and volleyball - all with my Ping-Pong ball. I take it between my hands and push it high up in the air and jump after it to catch it again. When the ball rolls in a corner ( or I push it there ) I have no difficulties to get it out. Carrying the ball upstairs is no problem either, I just take it in my mouth and go. Dieter and Karin are playing soccer with me every day to get me tired in the evening.......
Sometimes I try Karin out. She does not like me scratching the fabric of the window trimmings. She says a loud NO and I look at her and continue. Suddenly I got squirted with cold water from a spray bottle. I do not like this at all. When I try again sometimes, Karin stands up and grabs the bottle - boy - that is enough for me to run as fast as I can out of the danger zone! After a couple of minutes I peek around whether the bottle is not to see anymore, then I lay down right at Karin's feet and purr - for forgiveness. That has a very positive effect on Karin. She stands up and gets the brush and I get a wonderful treatment with it. ...
I get dry food and wet food. Dieter is the one feeding me most of the time. I gained already halve a pound - but I have still to grow I guess......

Three days ago, July 15th, was a very scary day for me!
No playing in the morning, just Karin and Dieter being very busy to hide all things around, packing everything out of sight and rolled all carpets up!! I ran from one room to the other - until I was offered to go into my carrier. Of course I shook my head and turned around - this time Dieter was faster, he grabbed me and placed me into the carrier and he closed the door.
While I was observing my parents by putting my nose close to the wire door, a very strange noise scared me a little. They were pushing the buttons to bring the 3 slide-outs in......another vibration: Dieter hooked the trailer up.
Finally I was placed between the seats in the truck - and off we went.
In the beginning I was meowing a lot, but then I realized that this drive had nothing to do with a vet......I calmed down. The drive took us overall 3,5 hours including fueling.
When we arrived in St. David, AZ, and Dieter had us parked there, he opened the entrance door of the trailer, put my carrier on the floor, opened the door of it - and I ran out.....first upstairs - to hide somewhere.
When Karin pushed the buttons for the slide-outs to go out, after Dieter had made all the connections outside, she made sure I was in a safe place.
When all looked like usual after a while, I looked out of the rear window and got shocked - - instead of a wide-open place I looked at green bushes. I was scared of those, crouched down and went upstairs to hide again... During the day I risked several times a longer look onto the greenery, and what can I say....I like it!! It is lovely.
Within the last 3 days I watched birds singing, a family of Quails looking for food, small lizards running around and the wind working on the leaves.

After driving some hours yesterday I was tired, wanted to do nothing but sleep. Karin put me in front of one window to show me that this location was different - was nice - but I did not care. In the evening, after our "football session", I started to look out of the back window of our trailer - and my ears went up....there was a little bunny outside nibbeling on some grass. And a dove investigated about our trailer. Well- I got curious - that's all for now.
Today I wanted to "schmooze" with Karin, and the best way to start this is the following: When she is away from the computer for a while, I drape myself on top of the keyboard - a 'sure-fire-way" to have her big attention. She is so nice and tolerates it - and endless petting and caressing units follow...... after the keyboard has been covered with the mouse pad.
Good Night for now!!

There is a Zoo outside!!
Karin and Dieter found the right place for the Hummingbird feeder - almost in front of my nose, just the window pane and the sunscreen in between.....
There were already bunnies hopping around, doves having fun, a big black bird flying around and telling me something...
and then came 2 Finches and were trying hard to get some sugar water - - and then came a woodpecker!!
Boy, I don't like him drinking the food provided for the little sweet hummingbirds. I stretch and stretch and try to paw the window, but this bird just ignores me. Karin thinks that he should have some drops when he is able to get them. When the Hummingbirds drink, I am relaxed, I know that that food is for those humming ones......

Iam playing ball with Dieter - fast and furious!!
Karin has nothing against the fact that her chrocheted carpet is used as a playing tool.
I like it when the ball is underneath that woolen carpet, I crawl underneath and ....whoosh - the ball shoots out. Karin plays with us too, when the ball comes her way.....
Karin would do a video of my playing, but this website is free and does not allow posting videos.....and a premium website is not in our budget.

It is a long time since I posted the last time - but you know, for me time is nothing.....people say that cats have no concepts of time. Whatever that is.....
By now we had a couple of driving days after a long time in Florence, AZ. Yesterday I was whining very often in my carrier in the truck, even though Karin talked to me often. The other times I was more quiet, maybe because of a longer time in between travel days. I am not fond of traveling!! Hopefully that will come to an end soon.
But I like to sit outside with Karin and Dieter, even when I am in a cage. So far they did not find a fitting harness for me to connect a leash. And I do not know how I will react to it when they will try it with me again. It is ordered online and is in the mail..... Talk to you soon! Ellie.

By now I find it very exciting to sit outside with Dieter and Karin. The heat is reduced to a wonderful warmth underneath the big awning. After about 2 hours I always start to tell my people that I would like to go inside, to run around again. They open the cage near the entrance door ........and inside I am - very fast!
May 18. 2014
I am very proud of what I did here........from the vanity straight up into that small space.......
June 05. 2014
We are in Granbury, Texas, since 5 days now - Wow - do I like this place! Big trees all around, birds singing, a big backyard with lots of grass!
I was outside in my wire cage, as usual, when it dawned on me that the outside needs to be explored.
Dieter put me on his lap, dressed me up with a nice red harness and - click - I was on a leash. He put me down onto the carpet and I looked around.....slowly I stood up and started to walk around.
First things first....I had to bite some grass off and taste it. Wonderful! Everything is just fine. I walk outside now!!!!
June 09. 2014
Every day I am getting a little bolder by exploring the neighborhood. I take Dieter on my leash and lead him around. I also found a wonderful spot on our property to aquire some good perfume. I roll - and roll - and roll - in a white sand spot near our truck.....
Today Karin put me on this chair to take a picture - away from all my action........

Yesterday I had an appointment with a local vet to get three shots and the first monthly preventive treatment for all kinds of possible harmful critters ( internally or externally...).....Karin will apply those drops once every month from now on.
Today I am totally groggy, sleeping in a favorite spot and not moving a bit...no drinking, eating or playing, not even purring.
Karin says that the lady vet was treating me with soft hands, with kindness and respect. When she learned that we are travelers, her "ears went up", because she loves RV'ing, too.
Here is THE address if someone looks out for a pet clinic in Granbury, TX:

This place is huge, looks modern and clean. We entered a big office where the entrance door had a sign that that door was for cats only. Karin and Dieter never saw that before. Obviously the dogs had their office at the side of the building. All staff is super-friendly and very caring.
Today I found out that I have healing power - I am a holistic cat!!
Well - Karin says she knew it all along......I have the feeling that Karin and I are related. She says her hugs and her kind words to others can heal too, at least make her friends and me feel better...... Purrrrrrrrr, purrrrrrrr.......

I really learned to walk on a leash - and I like it. Dieter had to go with me several timer per day when we were in Rockport, TX, where this picture was taken.
May 18. 2015 in Bushnell, Florida
Karin's and Dieter's camper friend Grace visited us with her friend Julie. Grace was very nice to me, but I have to be on alert......have to get used to visitors. She took the following picture in our bedroom while I was sitting in front of the big mirror.....

Too hot to be outside right now........
July 26th 2017 - - I wondered already when an upgrade would be in order......
I liked it already in Bushnell, FL, but my Humans decided to live permanently a little farther down south, in Zephyrhills, FL.
Wow, what a difference in scenery and private moments. I walk Dieter for long stretches now because there are no disturbances of taffic and many people - -and the lawn is wonderful!
Dieter built a wooden deck, which I love, and I also appreciate my cage as a refuge when I spot one of my neighbors dog wanting to play with me, wich means a lot of hyper action which I do not understand or appreciate.
When something approaches which I am not familiar with, I simply go into my open cage. I am always tethered and observed by Dieter or Karin. They never leave me outside alone.
You would not believe what I spotted around our rented property since we moved to here on May 1th 2017:
Snake, Armadillos, Fox, Racoons, other Cats, Chickens, Ducks, all kind of Birds, Hawk, Ibises, small Lizards in the hundreds, Frogs, Vultures and a Turtle.
The woods around are fabulous - they are home to many other little creatures, like beetles - and the wind stirring this Floridian Jungle has always my undivided attention. Movements are the highlights of my life!!
I am a Happy Cat - that is for sure. And I love my humans. They return my love in so many ways which makes me happy!

August/25, 2018 - we had moved again in June.......
We just moved within Zephyrhills. I like it in Zephyr Palms RV Park. How satisfied I am you can read in my face :
